About This Opportunity
The Graduate Data Engineer will work as part of the TERN Data Services and Analytics team to extract data from multiple sources and build data pipelines to ingest into repositories for publication and analysis. The successful applicant will have a strong background in data science with a good understanding of concepts, technologies and tools related to data engineering with good programming skills. The successful applicant will work with the informatics and data team and liaise with both internal and external users of TERN.
TERN is an Australian Government research infrastructure initiative to enhance Australia’s environmental research effort, particularly in the area of changes over time in ecosystems. TERN coordinates a national grid of field observation, sensors and remote sensing, which collectively provide open access data for researchers and other users in Australia and globally. TERN was established in 2009 by a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) grant from the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) and receives co-investment from state governments and partner institutions. Through a number of extensions and renewals of its grant, TERN’s project funding is currently in place until June 2023.
TERN’s head office is at the Long Pocket precinct of the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane and it partners with many other universities across Australia and CSIRO in delivering its research infrastructure project.
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Work with external and internal stakeholders to support data on-boarding into TERN data infrastructure.
  • Analyse and organise raw data for processing and analysis.
  • Migrate large volume of data from source databases to cloud storage for analysis and synthesis.
  • Build and document data systems and pipelines for on-time data delivery and access.
  • Assist with the data and metadata migration from legacy systems to TERN data and metadata catalog.
  • Assist in the analysis and testing of TERN’s data services and portal.
About You
  • Tertiary qualification in disciplines such data science, software engineering or computer science.
  • Experience in python programming.
  • Experience with relational databases and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience or understanding in:
    • ETL tools
    • Unix or Linux shell commands and scripting
    • Cloud computing fundamentals
    • Data visualisation tools.
  • Ability to analyse and break-down complex data problems
  • Knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and scalable data stores.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time, fixed-term position through to 30 June 2023 at HEW Level 5.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,212 - $80,430 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,488 - $94,103 per annum.
